Small Bite, Endless Fight: Keep Filariasis Out!

Abstract

Introduction: Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected tropical disease affecting approximately 50 million people worldwide, with around 36 million experiencing clinical manifestations such as hydrocele and lymphedema. It is transmitted through mosquito bites carrying filarial parasites and can lead to chronic conditions such as elephantiasis. The disease contributes to long-term disability and remains a significant public health concern in endemic regions. Therefore, increasing awareness of its burden, transmission, and prevention is essential. This poster aims to improve public understanding of lymphatic filariasis through simple and accessible educational approaches.

Methods: A descriptive educational poster was developed based on literature regarding epidemiology, transmission, clinical manifestations, and prevention strategies of lymphatic filariasis. Information was obtained from credible scientific sources, including reports and publications from the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as peer-reviewed articles from databases such as ScienceDirect and NCBI. The content was then organized into a clear and visually engaging format for educational purposes.

Results: The poster highlights key clinical signs summarized in the mnemonic BITE: Blocked lymphatics, Irreversible damage, Tissue scarring, and Elephantiasis. Prevention strategies are presented using the mnemonic FIGHT: Frequent use of bed nets, Information and education, Guarding with protective clothing, Health programs, and Topical repellents. These approaches simplify understanding of disease progression and control.

Conclusion: Lymphatic filariasis remains an important public health problem but is highly preventable through early awareness, vector control, personal protection, and participation in community health programs. The use of simple and memorable educational tools such as mnemonics can strengthen public understanding, encourage preventive behaviour, and support global efforts toward the elimination of lymphatic filariasis.
